Team Sahlen returns for the 3rd straight year to the ChumpCar World Series Pittsburgh Grand Prix event at Pittsburgh International Race Complex. In 2015, the team entered 3 Mazda RX7s in the 18 hour event, netting a top result of 4th place. In 2016, Team Sahlen returned for a 2nd shot at OVERALL Victory at ChumpCar’s Pittsburgh event. On Saturday and Sunday’s races, the team led for many portions of the event, only to fall short with 3rd place finishes each day. Now Team Sahlen returns in 2017, hoping that that “3rd time is the charm”.
Will Nonnamaker shared his thoughts leading up to the race – “We have been working hard over the summer to continue to evolve and develop our Rotary Rockets. We are hoping we have made some big improvements so that we can contend for the Overall victory come both Saturday and Sunday. The competition is always stiff at the sharp end of the ChumpCar field and we know we have to be at our best to challenge for the top spot on the podium.”
To take on this challenge, Team Sahlen will be entering all 3 of their Mazda RX7s: Charcoal, Ketchup and Mustard. The drivers for these 3 entries will be Patrick Emerling, Joe Sahlen and Joe, Wayne & Will Nonnamaker.
Team Manager Tim Weyer shared his thoughts on having 3 entries in the race – “With long endurance races, a lot can occur in the span of the event. Caution Flags and Pace Car periods can change up the strategy. It will be really nice to be able to split race strategies to cover all angles of how the race plays out. Our goal is Overall Victory, and having 3 cars in the race will help us play out all scenarios.”
Over the past year, Pittsburgh International Race Complex repaved a significant portion of the race track and the pits. Wayne Nonnamaker shared his excitement about the new surface – “Pitt Race Complex recently repaved the original portion of the track. I can’t wait to get out there and see how this flows with the new extension that was built 2 years ago. This repaving should really increase lap times and make for a very exciting experience every lap.”
The weekend schedule will start off Friday with all day Test Day
The green flag will fly at 9 am on both Saturday and Sunday, with the races concluding at 5 pm.
